Evolution of Kiosks in Nigeria.

Kiosks have become essential in the Nigerian business environment offering vendors a flexible medium for displaying merchandise. This article shall discuss the history of kiosks in Nigeria over the years.

The Birth of Kiosks

Ancient stalls in early market places paved way for the concept of kiosks that we have today. However, they were not found in Nigeria until the early 20th century. The word “kiosk” originates from the Turkish language and it translates literally as “köşk” meaning a small building, pavillion or summer house. The British brought it to Nigeria as part of colonialism when they created administration in the country. British referred the words to those structures which were constructed in a small magnitude and used for different purposes or even for selling products.

Nigeria saw its economy plunge in the late 80’s contributing more to informal businesses. Consequently, the government came up with container shops; which was a solution for those traders who were operating on a small scale as required during the lockdown period. The containers that once served as carrier of goods became functional retail spaces. This enabled new businesses to put up their shops faster but more cheaply.


Inspiration and Year of Introduction

It is also important to note that container shops were introduced into the Nigerian economy with a key objective to offer a cheap, as well as convenient retail space. The government understood that container shops could help promote self-employment and increase economic growth. The introduction of the first container shops took place in 1991, and these stores became popular among small business entrepreneurs.


A Kiosk or Container shop requirements.

Before building a kiosk or container shop in Nigeria, some conditions have to be fulfilled. To start with, the intending entrepreneurs must look for an ideal site for their businesses. It can include leasing place or acquiring permission to use one of such kiosks and container shops. Moreover, entrepreneurs should follow a set of provisions that outline building codes and regulations in order to make the buildings safe and stable.

As a result, people like Alhaji Lateef Jakande and the entire Nigerian government came up with these innovative retail spaces through which they are still changing the nations’ economic status thereby giving it an ultimate convenience.
